This area is still so off the tourist trail that the intrepid traveller can easily find that unique experience we all pine for. Although, given the lack of tourist set up and variance of ethnic groups in the area, having a local guide can be all important. The area is currently training local guides who will be licenced in community based tourism. Your hotel will be able help you arrange this.
As Mawlamyine is still a little off the beaten track, it can be difficult to find information on how to get there. There are several options available to you.
We haven’t included the train as it’s not recommended – it is longer and much less comfortable than the bus.
During our 6 week stay in Myanmar’s Mawlamyine, eating proved to be a bit if a challenge. The non touristy nature of this town is what makes it amazing, but also makes it difficult to work out what to eat!
