Site Guide: Set-Se Beach, Mon State, Myanmar

Site Name: Set-Se Beach
Area: Mon State

Site Description:

Set-Se is a beach in Mon State. Whilst it can’t boast the white sand and blue waters of nearby Thailand, Set-Se has its own charms – not least being that there are few tourists there.

The waters are warm and there is a large shallow shelf for paddling on. It’s a nice beach to just walk along as it is so large. If you get tired of walking you can ride a horse or hire a motorbike taxi. People even use these to get to the shoreline.

You can hire tubes to float in and a range of food and drinks (alcoholic and non) are available.

Travel Advice:

You can get here by hiring a car/driver. It takes around 2 hours from Mawlamyine.

You can hire a car for a day that seats about 12 people in the tray, for around 60,000 kyat. In a day from Mawlamyine you could visit Set-Se as well as the death railway, WWII cemetery, giant reclining Buddha and Kyaik Ka Mi Ye Le Pagoda. As a group it makes for a cheap day out.

Tip: Go during the week and you will be able to have a patch of the beach all to yourself.

Be Aware:

There is a bit of a dog problem around the car parking/food area of the beach. Avoid loitering here with food as some of the dogs seemed quite vicious.

Whilst this is a beach, it is still Myanmar. So ladies, put those bikinis away. Your best bet is a vest top (not to low cut) and three quarter trousers. You will see locals swimming in jeans!
