Not a day goes by here in Mawlamyine without something amazing, curious or even slightly bizarre happening. After we finished class and went for a sunset wander on Wednesday evening, we returned to a phone call telling us to get ready ASAP as a car was coming to collect us to see something ‘Spiritual’.
Site Name: Maelan Pagoda
Area: Karen State or Mon State (depending on who you ask)
Similar to the more well known ‘Golden Rock’ pagoda at Kyaik Hti Yo this site is believed to house a strand of Buddha’s hair. There are 6 such sites in the region. What makes this one so significant is that it’s only in the last year that non-Karen people have been allowed to visit. We were in fact the first foreigners to visit this site as it is not on the tourist trail at all. So much so that we became somewhat of an attraction ourselves. This is of course changing and the infrastructure to take large numbers of tourists is currently being put into place. Now is the time to go.
So far there have been many little bits and pieces that I’ve wanted to share but haven’t really found a place for in a post. So here is a brain dump of the wonderful, the different and the decidedly odd.
We’ve now been in Mawlamyine for almost a week and have not seen a single cloud. It’s been lovely and warm in the days, cool at night and no humidity to speak of. Paradise.
